The purpose of this video is to explain and demonstrate switching on gns3. It is possible to get switching emulation working on gns3. What Does GNS3 Do?Compared to other network simulator programs (RouterSim, Boson NetSim), you can use Cisco IOS images more specifically with the back-end Hypervisor software through this network simulator program.
Other software includes network devices such as Routers or Switches. As a result, you can run and use a real Cisco Router on your computer with GNS3.
This simulator software uses IDLE-PC Value to show better performance of Cisco Routers or Switch IOS and shows you the optimal value with * character.
You can set the Idle-PC value when adding a device to the program.

Post subject: [SOLVED] there is a bug as emulating a switch with NM-16ESW
when i used a 3640 to emulate a switch,i setup the router with nm-16esw module in slot 0 bu gns3, as i add link between a router to the emulated switch,the 3640's nm-16esw module was automaticly changed to nm-1fe-tx.
is it a bug?

Have you connected a link to your NM-16ESW before (you must use manual mode).

Hi,
Have you connected a link to your NM-16ESW before (you must use manual mode).

I too have the same issue with GNS3 ver 0.6
I am running the 3745 series router with enterprise IOS.
However when I add a module manually via the configure option and select the NM-16ESW to go in slot 0 it goes fine. However once I start adding links from the switch there are issues:
1) I don't get the option like I used to that I can select what port to use (not sure if this is just a feature of the new version or not?)
2) Until I do any links to other devices it shows with the correct module. However once add links to other devices the NM-16ESW module is gone and replaced with individual NM-1FE-TX modules.
Has anyone else come across this or a fix/workaround for it? It is quite key that I can be able to use the -16ESW module for what I am trying to achieve.
Please let me know if there is any further testing you would like me to do.

Go to Edit > pref > general tab > GUI settings > put a check on 'Always use manual mode when adding link

I am having the same issue with the emulation of the NM-16ESW to almost all IOS. where it tells you that u cant add it unless in manual mode.
1. I went to the Edit > Preferences > General > GUI settings and highlighted the add links manuat tab . Same result as in error
2. When to the 
 C:Documents and SettingsusernameApplication Datagns3.ini
 and i opened the gns3.ini file in notepad 
 [GNS3]
console=start c:putty.exe -telnet %h %p
gui_draw_selected_rectangle=false
gui_show_status_points=true
gui_use_manual_connection=true changed this from false to true
Same result as in error
3. The only thing that worked is to resort to an older version of gns3 i went back to the previous version.
